New Delhi: A Sub-inspector in Delhi Police was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh for clearing the name of a businessman from a case, an official statement said on Thursday.
The Central Bureau of Investigation, which laid the trap in the arrest of the accused identified as Rahul Malik, said that the cop had demanded an installment of Rs 2.5 lakh out of total Rs 14 lakh.
The action was taken against the cop after the businessman approached the central agency. The businessman had approached the CBI with the complaint against Malik.
According to the CBI, the police officer was demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to remove the businessman's name from the case. He threatened that if the requested amount was not paid, the businessman would be arrested.
The central agency took action after both parties agreed on a mutually accepted amount for the bribe, the details of which CBI was already aware about.
After negotiations, the businessman agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 14 lakh. He allegedly provided the contact details of a hawala operator in Mumbai and the hawala token number where the bribe was to be paid.
"On March 19, 2025, the CBI successfully set a trap in which the hawala operator accepted a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh in Mumbai on behalf of public servants as part of the bribe payment, facilitated through multiple hawala operators in Mumbai, Erode (TN), and New Delhi," CBI said.
He will be taken to Mumbai for further investigation, officials said.
