Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh due to a depression forming over the Bay of Bengal.

Moving towards the coast at 22 km/h, the system is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Nellore, near Chennai, by early October 17, 2024.

Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding are forecasted for several districts in northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. Chennai and Nellore are bracing for severe downpours and localized flooding, prompting the closure of schools, offices, and flight cancellations. Authorities have deployed boats and disaster response teams, with experts linking the intensifying rains to climate change.
