Chennai rains: Schools continue to be closed in Kanyakumari, Tenkasi districts amid heavy rainfall

In view of heavy rainfall, schools continued to be closed in Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts.

Chennai: In view of heavy rainfall, schools continued to be closed in Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu. The Anna University exams have been deferred in three districts. Schools and colleges are shut in Thoothukudi and Nellai (Tirunelveli). 

On December 18,a school holiday was announced in four districts Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi amid heavy rainfall.

On Monday, India Meterological Department issued red alert in Tamil Nadu in view of heavy rainfall. 

On Sunday heavy rains lashed the Southern state, playing havoc in districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukodi and Tenkasi. According to the regional meteorological centre (RMC), a cyclonic storm was seen over the Cormin area and its neighborhood, extending up to mid tropospheric levels. A red alert was issued as heavy to very heavy rainfall was expected.

Heavy waterlogging was observed in Thoothukodi in Tamil Nadu.

 Five helicopters from the Navy and Air Force will start delivering food and other relief supplies to the flood-affected parts of the state from Tuesday, according to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena on Monday, as per media reports.

There has been unusually high rainfall and flooding in four districts in Tamil Nadu's south. Heavy rains wreaked havoc in the districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi, submerging paddy fields, highways,
bridges, and numerous residential colonies under sheets of water.
