Akali leader Majithia appears before Punjab Police in drugs case
SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said before going for questioning that the case against him is politically motivated.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Saturday appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Punjab Police in connection with a drugs case in Patiala. As per police sources, this was Majithia's second appearance before the SIT in a month. Earlier, he was grilled for over seven hours by the investigation team on December 18.
The SIT team led by Additional Director General of Police (Patiala range) Mukhwinder Singh Chhina questioned Majithia on Saturday. During the questioning he was asked a wide range of questions related to the drugs case.
Majithia calls it politically motivated
Majithia, a three-times MLA, however, maintained that the case against him was the result of political differences. Talking to reporters before entering the SIT office, he said that the case against him is politically motivated.
The Akali leader even threw a challenge at Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann saying, "If you have the guts, you should become the chairman of the SIT." He claimed that SIT head Chhina will be retiring from the post on Sunday and has asked CM Mann not to use his officers to target the SAD leader, reports news agency PTI.
Notably, SAD leader Majithia was booked under the NDPS Act on December 20, 2021, when the then Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government was in power in the state.
Following the registration of the case, Majithia spent over five months in Patiala jail and walked out of prison in August 2022.
Further legal action in the matter is being taken.
