According to the police, Poojary wasn't arrested so far as his case was termed as a long-pending case in 2006. The accused was allegedly involved in riots in Hubballi after Babri demolition in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya.

A case was registered at Hubballi city police station against nine people for setting ablaze a shop during the riots.

A senior police official said that the arrest of the accused was done during a routine drive by the police, wherein police carried out a drive to crack down the long pending cases. The present case, in which the accused was arrested, was termed as a long pending case in 2016.

Ayodhya’s 16th century mosque, Babri Masjid, was demolished in December, 1992. The site is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, a prominent deity in Hindu religion.

The Babri Masjid demolition was followed up by the protracted legal battles over the ownership of the disputed site, which ultimately culminated in the Supreme Court's verdict in November 2019. The land was allocated for the construction of a Ram temple, while an alternate plot for the construction of a mosque was also provided.
