Cyclone Michaung landfall process underway in south Andhra, likely to continue for next 3 hours

Visakhapatman: The landfall process of Cyclone Michaung close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast has started and is likely to continue for the next 3 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.
“SCS MICHAUNG at 1230IST of 5Dec about 20km ENE of Ongole,45Km of SW of Bapatla. to cross south AP coast close to Bapatla during next 2hr as SCS with max wind speed of 90-100kmph. LANDFALL PROCESS IS CONTINUING, LIKELY TO CONTINUE FOR NEXT 3 Hrs.”, the IMD tweeted.
Under the effect of the Cyclone, Machilipatnam on Tuesday witnessed strong winds and rain. The Cyclone is expected to make landfall near Bapatla in the state in the next two hours.
"The severe cyclonic storm "MICHAUNG" over the west-central Bay of Bengal along and off south Andhra Pradesh coast moved northwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 1130 hours ist of 5th December, 2023 over the same region near latitude 15.45°n and longitude 80.25°e, about 20 km east of Ongole, 50 km south-southwest of Bapatla, 70 km north-northeast of Kavali, 110 km north northeast of Nellore, and 120 km southwest of Machilipatnam," IMD added.
Meanwhile, the cyclone fury in Chennai has claimed eight lives. Multiple roads and subways were closed due to waterlogging in the wake of the severe cyclonic storm Michaung.
Michaung is expected to make landfall on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam today. The Amaravati Meteorological Centre noted that the intensity of gales near the centre of the severe cyclonic storm is 90 - 100 km per hour and gusting up to 110 kmph.
Meanwhile, 9,454 people have been evacuated from the seven districts of Konaseema, Kakinada, Krishna, Bapatla and Prakasam to safety in 211 relief camps, according to a dataset shared by APSDMA with PTI.
Andhra Pradesh braces for impact
With the severe cyclonic storm Michaung anticipated to hit Bapatla during its passage, residents have been advised against going outdoors. Every police station in the district has been equipped with a JCB excavator, cutter machines, ropes and expert swimmers. Taking past incidents into account, district police identified 24 vulnerable bridges and deployed police personnel there. Similarly, 300 police personnel and other officials have been deployed in villages which are likely to suffer inundation.
