Dehardun: A clash erupted at Dehradun railway station on late Thursday night, leading to stone pelting and the vandalism of trains as members of two communities confronted each other. The violence reportedly stemmed from an interfaith relationship involving a minor girl from Uttar Pradesh's Badaun and a local man.

According to police, the unrest started after both groups learned that the couple was present at the station. The situation escalated, resulting in violence and damage to parked trains. Heavy police deployment was quickly arranged in and around the station to bring the situation under control.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh said, “An incident took place at Dehradun Railway Station where a minor girl and a man were seen talking. The minor girl from Badaun came to meet someone here. There was already a missing person report filed in Badaun. On getting suspicious, the ground police team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) questioned the duo."

He stated, “Upon interrogation, it was known that it was a matter related to Hindu-Muslim or different communities. Following this, some people gathered and got into an argument. Police reached the spot. There was also stone pelting and some vehicles were vandalised."

The police official added, “The situation is now under control, and a case has been registered against unknown individuals involved in the violence. We are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible.”

Dehradun Police took to X and issued the statement saying, “The police are conducting foot patrols in and around the railway station, including areas like Rita Mandi, to ensure peace. They also confirmed that serious charges under various sections, including the 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act, have been filed at Kotwali Nagar police station, Dehradun.”

An investigation is underway, and cases will be registered against those found responsible for the unrest.
