New Delhi: An argument over seating arrangements turned violent after a man opened fire at a cafe in the national capital at Sunday night. So far, five people have been arrested in connection with the firing incident in southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan.

What we know so far:

  • According to Delhi Police, some people from Jahangirpuri area had come to the cafe. 
  • They took out a pistol and opened fire in the air during a verbal fight with the cafe manager over a table, the police added.
  • The argument ensued beween the group and the manager following a dispute over seating on a table.
  • It is learnt that a group of men from north west Delhi's Jahangirpuri had reached Satya Niketan's Love Bites cafe on Sunday night to celebrate a friend's birthday.
  • Reports suggested that one among them sat on a glass table and when the manager objected to this and an argument broke out.
  • Later, some more men joined the argument which snowballed into a fight during which one of them fired in the air outside of the cafe, police said. A four-wheeler, used in the crime was recovered from the accused Aurangzeb. 
  • The illegal firearm, a Pistol 7.65 mm with 5 live rounds that was used in the incident were also recovered from the accused Javed.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), Rohit Meena, a call was received by the South campus police station at around 9 pm in connection with the shooting incident.

After receiving the information, beat staff from the police station rushed to the spot and nabbed one of the accused after a chase. Quoting a staff of the cafe, the DCP said some men had come to the eatery for dinner around 8.30 pm and one of them sat on a glass table.

The cafe owner, Rohit, objected to this and a heated argument ensued, he added. After this, some more men arrived and a scuffle broke out during which one of them fired in the air outside of the cafe, the DCP said.

Police said a case was being registered in connection with the matter. 

"We have identified all of them and they will be nabbed soon. Further investigation is underway," DCP Meena said.
