Delhi Police arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly abducting, raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl. Cops said the accused, identified as Sanjeev Rana, later allegedly dumped the body of the minor in Munak Canal.

Cops launched teams to apprehend the accused after the minor went missing from her residence in Swaroop Nagar area. PTI reported that the victim's parents working as labourers in a factory and residents of rented accommodation, told cops that their daughter was taken by a man while she was playing outside their house.

As Rana was hospitalised after he was met with an accident on December 15 in Rohini area, cops couldn't record his statement since doctors declared him unfit. Upon investigation, cops figured out that victim had entered the accused's vehicle around 2 pm on December 12.

Rana, on December 17, confessed to kidnapping, raping and murdering the minor. He admitted to dumping her body in the canal. Efforts to trace the minor's body are on. Cops told PTI, "We are checking the entire route taken by the accused, and he will be brought in to assist in the search for the victim's body on Tuesday."

Delhi Commission for Women, on Tuesday, took a suo-moto cognisance of the incident stating it as a 'very serious matter.' In its letter to Delhi Police, it has sought details of the case by December 22 of the following:

1) Copy of FIR registered in the matter.
2) Details of accused arrested in the matter. If no accused has been arrested, please provide reasons for the same.
3) Whether the body of the girl has been recovered. If no, please provide reasons for the same.
4) Detail Action Taken Report in the matter.

The Delhi Police, on December 12, registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 364 (kidnapping), Section 302 (murder), and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The father of the victim has demanded death for the accused. He added, "The accused is our landlord and stays around 500 metres away from our one-room set. He kidnapped my daughter, took her to some unknown location in his car and raped her. Capital punishment is the right action for him."

The family members of the girl and several other people held a protest near her house and demanded a strict action against the landlord.

Cops got to know that the girl was lured with a car ride by the family's landlord, who took her to some isolated place raped and murdered her. (with PTI inputs)
