First Time in Delhi’s History, Both CM and LoP Will Be Women As Atishi Chosen Opposition Leader

New Delhi: In a historic first, Delhi is set to have both a woman Chief Minister and a woman Leader of Opposition, as the AAP picked Atishi to represent the Arvind Kejriwal-led party in the Assembly. 

AAP will sit in the opposition after it suffered defeat at the hands of the BJP in the Assembly polls held earlier this month. The party only managed to win 22 seats in a 70-seat Assembly. This is the first time a woman leader of the opposition has been picked in the Delhi Assembly. 

“The people of Delhi have entrusted us with the role of opposition, and as a strong opposition, we will ensure that the BJP government fulfills all its promises made to the people of Delhi,” said former Delhi CM Atishi. 

Delhi To See Woman CM vs Woman LoP For First Time 

BJP, which cruised to victory after winning 48 seats, appointed Rekha Gupta as Chief Minister.

Prior to Rekha Gupta, only three women leaders—BJP’s Sushma Swaraj, Congress ’ Sheila Dikshit, and AAP’s Atishi—have been Chief Ministers of Delhi.

In the 52-day tenure of Sushma Swaraj as the CM, Deep Chand Bhanu was the leader of the opposition from the Congress. 

During the three terms of Sheila Dikshit, Madan Lal Khurana, Jagdish Mukhi, and VK Malhotra were the opposition leaders from the BJP. 

Atishi, who replaced Arvind Kejriwal, faced the BJP's Vijender Gupta from the opposition. 

New MLAs to Take Oath on Feb 24

The first session of the eighth Legislative Assembly of Delhi will begin on February 24.

The three-day assembly session will see the election of the House speaker and deputy speaker. 

The BJP has promised that it will table 14 pending CAG reports regarding the performance of the previous AAP government.
