Manipur: Eighty-seven bodies of the victims of the ethnic violence in Manipur were laid to rest in Tuibong, Churachandpur on Wednesday afternoon. After the funeral, towards the evening, incidents of indiscriminate firing by suspected militants were reported from several areas, in which one girl was critically wounded.

Hours after the funeral, the situation turned violent once again in the bordering areas of the Church and Bishnupur district of Manipur. As per reports, suspected militants belonging to the Kuki community indiscriminately fired towards the valley from the foothills bordering both the districts.

Bullets reached the National Highway between Churachandpur and Bishnupur. Firing was reported from Kwakta, Torbung and Terakhonsangbi villages, as they lie just next to the foothills divided by the paddy fields.

The Manipur police and its commandos along with the central forces deployed in the buffer zone immediately swung into action in retaliation.

However, a Meitei Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) girl was injured by a stray bullet in the head. She was rushed to Imphal in critical condition and it has been learnt that she is still undergoing treatment.

It may be mentioned that the areas close to the foothills have suffered the most in ethnic violence. Many people have lost their lives because of stray bullets and mortars fired by suspected Kuki militants from the foothills. The walls of the houses in the area, both mud and concrete bear marks of bullets fired from the foothills. Many houses have pierced roofs, as they were reportedly showered with bullets.

Kishan, a local journalist in the area said that security had already been beefed up in the area since Monday, anticipating some offensive from the hills.

"The security forces were on standby when the firing started. That's why there was no casualty, as people were mostly on the safe side and the forces retaliated to the firing," he said.
