Bengaluru: Heavy rains in Karnataka’s capital disrupted flight operations, forcing at least 10 flights bound for Bengaluru to be diverted to Chennai, airport officials confirmed on Monday. The adverse weather conditions also caused major traffic congestion in several parts of the city, including the route to Kempegowda International Airport.
Leading airline IndiGo posted an advisory on X, stating that the unfavourable weather in Bengaluru continued to impact flight schedules.
"We're closely monitoring the weather and will keep you informed with timely updates," IndiGo said. The airline urged passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
"Should there be a need to adjust your travel plans, you can explore flexible rebooking options or claim a refund conveniently via our website," the statement added.
Similarly, Air India confirmed that its flight operations were affected due to air traffic congestion caused by the bad weather.
"We advise all our passengers to check their flight status before proceeding to the airport," the airline posted on X.
Apart from flight disruptions, several roads in Bengaluru were flooded, causing massive traffic jams in busy areas. Social media posts from residents showed waterlogged streets and vehicles stuck in stagnant water.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police issued an alert regarding severe congestion on the way to the airport.
"Due to heavy waterlogging at Hunsmaranahalli, there is severe traffic congestion, affecting the traffic towards the International Airport," the police stated.
Bengaluru frequently experiences long traffic jams, which worsen during heavy rainfall. The city's drainage system often struggles to cope with heavy downpours, leading to waterlogging and transport disruptions.
Authorities have advised commuters to plan their travel accordingly and check live traffic updates before heading out. Airlines are expected to resume normal operations once weather conditions improve.
