Huge Uproar in Parliament Over Cash Piles at Delhi High Court Judge

The Rajya Sabha on Friday witnessed a huge uproar over the alleged recovery of cash from the residence of a sitting Delhi High Court judge. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar assured members that he would look into ways to facilitate a structured debate on the issue. 

During the morning session, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised concerns about judicial accountability and requested the Chair’s response. He also reminded the Chairman about a pending notice regarding the impeachment of an Allahabad High Court judge. He also highlighted reports of a significant amount of cash being found at the judge’s residence, describing it as a matter of serious concern. 

Ramesh further pointed out that 50 Members of Parliament had previously submitted a notice to the Chairman regarding certain remarks made by an Allahabad High Court judge. He stressed the urgent need for judicial accountability, a concern that Chairman Dhankhar has also acknowledged in past discussions.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar Reacted in Rajya Sabha: 

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed concern over the alleged cash recovery case, stating that the delay in bringing the matter to light was troubling. He noted that if such an incident had involved a politician, bureaucrat, or industrialist, they would have immediately faced scrutiny. 

He stressed the importance of a transparent and accountable response and expressed confidence that necessary action would follow. 

He also mentioned plans to discuss the issue with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to establish a proper forum for debate during the session. 

Cash Pile Recovered from Justice Varma's Home: 

A fire broke out at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma, leading to the discovery of a massive pile of cash. The incident, which took place on March 14, gained significant attention within judicial circles. 

Following this, on March 20, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, decided to transfer Justice Varma to his parent High Court the Allahabad High Court.
