India Sends Second Rice Consignment Of 16,400 Tonnes To Bangladesh Amid Tensions
Despite strained relations between India and Bangladesh, a second consignment of rice from India reportedly arrived at Mongla Port on Saturday.

Dhaka: Despite strained relations between India and Bangladesh following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina , a second consignment of rice from India reportedly arrived at Mongla Port on Saturday. The shipment, consisting of 16,400 tonnes of rice, was transported on two ships - the Panama-flagged vessel BMC Alpha and the Thailand-flagged MV Sea Forest, as per reports.
The BMC Alpha arrived from Odisha 's Dhamra Port carrying 7,700 tonnes of rice, while the MV Sea Forest arrived from Kolkata Port with 8,700 tonnes. This consignment is part of a larger agreement between India and Bangladesh, under which Bangladesh is set to receive 300,000 tonnes of rice from India. According to the Mongla Food Controller's Office, 40 percent of the rice will be unloaded at Mongla Port, while the remaining 60 percent will be unloaded at Chittagong Port, according to the news agency PTI.
India's gesture to fulfill the need for rice in Bangladesh comes amid tensions between the two nations, particularly after Bangladesh's interim government announced plans to scrap "uneven agreements" on borders with India. The decision is expected to be discussed during the meeting of the directors general of the border guards of the two countries in February.
Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, the 84-year-old Nobel laureate, assumed the role in August last year after the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country.
Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh after a massive student-led protest toppled her 16-year regime, has been living in India since August 5 last year. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials for "crimes against humanity and genocide". Last year, Dhaka sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi seeking Hasina's extradition.
Meanwhile, despite tensions and disagreements, India continues to extend support to Bangladesh with essential goods.
