Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident, a makeshift bridge installed for Christmas celebrations collapsed in Kerala's Poovar near Neyyattinkara, causing injuries to at least seven people on Monday night, officials said.
The senior officials privy to the matter mentioned that 7-8 persons were injured, including a woman, who sufferd a major leg fracture.
"A makeshift pathway that was set up for a Christmas celebration collapsed in Thiruvananthapuram's Poovar area. As many as seven people sustained minor injuries," an official said.
The collapsed temporary bridge was installed as part of Christmas celebration, allowing poeple to cross over a wall to the other side to see a waterfall and nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus as well as other decorations.
Soon after the incident, the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, officials said.
The initial reports suggested that the incident took place at 9 pm on Monday when several persons walked on the top of the bridge, which wasn't reportedly designed to support their weight. Subsequently, it slanted to one side, toppling those individuals standing there.
The bridge was just around five feet above the ground and was meant to support a few people at a time, said officials adding that however, several persons climbed on to it simultaneously which resulted in the accident.
