New Delhi: The Ahmedabad Police has arrested a man for posing as a CBI official and duping people across several states. The accused, identified as Bharat Chhabra, was nabbed from Karnal in Haryana after months-long search.

According to sources, Chhabra is accused of defrauding people by boasting connections with high-level politicians, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Chhabra (40) came under police lens after a case was filed against him in Ahmedabad for fleeing without paying a bill at hotel where he stayed for a couple of times. He allegedly concealed his identity and posed as a CBI offer at the hotel.

Police said the accused also solicited Rs 2.22 lakh from an individual on the pretext of securing the release of a prisoner from jail. He allegedly claimed to have sway over matters relating to the CBI, Home Ministry, PMO, and even influential figures in the BJP and RSS. Luring people with promise of extraordinary favours, he would even encourage people to call him at midnight to demonstrate his supposed influenced.

Hailing from Haryana 's Karnal, Chhabra is said to have used his skills to spread an intricate web of deception across several states, including in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Telangana. His image for political connections was so widespread in Haryana that even Gujarat Police faced significant challenges in arresting him.

Police said that Chhabra, who holds a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) degree, had been engaging in such duping people for the past four years.

Meanwhile, a local court has granted police a 10-day remand for further investigation. During the remand period, the police plan to probe the full extent of his malicious web and uncover potential accomplices.
