KOTA, RAJASTHAN: On Monday, local police said that a 22-year-old psych ward patient had been allegedly molested by a sweeper at the New Medical College Hospital in Rajasthan's Kota city. According to a PTI report, the incident took place on Sunday and the accused has since been booked by the police. As per the sequence of events detailed by the SHO at the Mahaveer Nagar police station, Harinarayan Sharma, the female patient went to the toilet at around 10:30. At this point, the accused, identified as Sunil Harijan, was cleaning the toilet and proceeded to lock the door from the inside. Following this, he allegedly molested the woman.

Concerned when she did not return, the patient's mother and brother, who were in the hospital at the time, tried to enter the bathroom but found it locked. They continued to knock on the door until it was opened, at which point they caught hold of the sweeper and handed him over to the hospital guards.

The victim in question has yet to record her statement but the accused has already been booked under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

Police action aside, the head of the hospital's psychiatric department, BS Shekhawat, reportedly called a meeting of senior hospital officials to discuss further action. As noted in a PTI report, the hospital is set to issue directions that will make it mandatory for female patients to be accompanied by female staffers when heading to the bathroom. Moreover, steps will also reportedly be taken to ensure no male member of the cleaning staff is inside toilets meant for women when in use.
