Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) dismissed a bus driver on Sunday after a video surfaced showing him watching a cricket match on his mobile phone while driving on the Mumbai-Pune route. The incident, which took place on March 22, prompted swift action from Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik after a passenger recorded and reported the violation.

Passenger’s Video Led to Action

A passenger onboard the e-Shivneri bus noticed the driver watching a cricket match on his mobile phone while at the wheel. Concerned for passenger safety, the individual captured a video of the reckless behavior and sent it directly to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.

The passenger also posted the video on social media, tagging state ministers and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . The footage quickly gained attention, prompting the minister to order strict action against the driver.

Driver Dismissed, Bus Operator Fined

Following the minister’s directive, senior MSRTC officials investigated the incident. The bus driver, who was employed by a private operator, was immediately dismissed for negligence. Additionally, a fine of ₹5,000 was imposed on the private company responsible for providing the service.

Minister Calls for Stricter Regulations

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized the importance of passenger safety and stated that reckless driving would not be tolerated.

"E-Shivneri is a key service on the Mumbai-Pune route. Several people travel by this bus. The service is known for being accident-free. It is necessary to take strict action against drivers who operate vehicles recklessly and endanger passengers," Sarnaik said.

He further highlighted the need for regular training programs for drivers employed by private operators under MSRTC to ensure adherence to strict safety norms.

Crackdown on Distracted Driving

Minister Sarnaik also acknowledged growing concerns about drivers using mobile phones while operating vehicles.

"There have been complaints that drivers of autorickshaws and taxis also watch matches or movies on mobile phones while driving, often with earphones on. The transport department will soon introduce new regulations against such practices," he stated.
