It's raining cats and dogs in Mumbai and with this the heavy rainfall has continued to batter several parts of Maharashtra today, September 25, 2024, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for multiple districts across the state. A five-day district-wise forecast has been released, spanning from September 25 to September 29, 2024, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in several regions.

Palghar

  • September 25-27 (Wednesday-Friday): The region is expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places. The likelihood of these conditions occurring is categorised as 'Very Likely.'
  • September 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday): The rainfall is expected to moderate over the weekend, with the probability of moderate rain remaining very likely."

Thane

  • "September 25-26 (Wednesday-Thursday): Extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is predicted for Thane, with the probability being 'Very Likely.'
  • September 27 (Friday): Heavy rainfall persists with thunderstorms.
  • September 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday): Conditions ease into moderate rain over the weekend."

Mumbai

  • "September 25-27 (Wednesday-Friday): Like Palghar and Thane, Mumbai will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds until Friday.
  • September 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday): Rainfall intensity is expected to reduce, with moderate rain forecasted for the weekend."

Raigad

  • "September 25-26 (Wednesday-Thursday): Extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely, with the highest probability marked for these two days.
  • September 27 (Friday): Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places, with thunderstorms continuing.
  • September 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday): Moderate rain is forecasted for the weekend, as the conditions ease."

Ratnagiri

  • "September 25-26 (Wednesday-Thursday): Extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is expected, with a 'Very Likely' probability of occurrence.
  • September 27 (Friday): Rainfall intensity reduces to heavy rainfall at isolated places.
  • September 28-29 (Saturday-Sunday): Moderate rain is likely over the weekend."

The IMD has urged residents in these regions to remain cautious and be prepared for potential disruptions such as waterlogging, flooding, and delays in transportation due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was also affected and 2 flights were diverted and seven flights had to make a go-around at Mumbai airport as heavy rains returned to lash Mumbai and surrounding areas on Wednesday after a long hiatus. Among the affected flights, Vistara Flight UK941, travelling from Delhi to Mumbai, was diverted to Hyderabad due to heavy rain and poor visibility. The flight was expected to land in Hyderabad at 9:10 p.m., as stated by airline officials.

The Met Department has issued a red alert for the city and its neighbouring districts, predicting "extremely heavy rainfall". A civic official said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its orange alert for Mumbai to a red alert valid till 8.30 am on Thursday.
