Nagpur: Section 144 has been imposed in Nagpur after the city witnessed massive clashes following a dispute between two groups in the Mahal area on Friday.
Police have urged the people not to step out of their homes unnecessarily.
According to police, the protests erupted after rumours were spread that the holy book of the Muslim community was burnt during an agitation by a certain organisation for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 grants the Executive Magistrate of any state or territory the authority to issue orders banning the assembly of four or more individuals in a specific area.
Under this law, each participant in an 'unlawful assembly' can be charged with rioting.

Section 144 is typically invoked in situations involving immediate threats or risks that could lead to harm, disturbance, or damage to human life or property. It generally prohibits public gatherings to maintain order and prevent potential unrest.
Police undertook combing operation in Mahal area and said that situation is under control.
Those involved are being identified and arrested, cops said.
