New Delhi: A 15-year-old girl’s wedding was stopped just in time in Delhi’s Rohini after a joint operation by an NGO and the police on Wednesday. The girl was about to be married to a 21-year-old man at a newly opened temple when suspicions arose, leading to police intervention.

NGO Alerted Police After Temple Board Member Raised Suspicion

According to the police, the NGO Bal Vikas Dhara (BVD) received information about an illegal child marriage and immediately alerted the authorities.

In a statement, BVD said, "The girl was about to be married to a 21-year-old man at a newly opened temple when a temple board member, also associated with BVD, grew suspicious. He informed the NGO."

Following this, multiple teams from the NGO and police reached the location. When questioned, the groom provided his Aadhaar card as proof of age, but the bride’s family hesitated to show her identification.

Bride’s Family Gave Inconsistent Answers

Authorities noted that the bride’s family gave contradictory answers about her documents, raising suspicions. The police called a medical team to verify the girl’s age.

"Doctors confirmed that she was underage, yet the families insisted they were not violating the law. Later, at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office, they claimed it was an engagement, not a wedding," the BVD statement read.

Aadhaar Card Confirmed Bride Was Underage

After 24 hours of resistance, the girl’s family finally provided her Aadhaar card, which confirmed that she was only 15 years old.

Following this revelation, an FIR was registered at Prem Nagar Police Station, and the girl was placed in a shelter home for her protection.

Girl Produced Before Child Welfare Committee

According to the police, "An FIR was registered and an investigation was assigned. The girl was later produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Rohini, where she was confirmed as a minor at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing."

Authorities have assured that further legal action will be taken against those responsible for attempting to conduct the illegal child marriage.
