Mumbai: A fresh controversy has erupted in Mumbai over the use of the Marathi language, following an altercation between a D-Mart employee and a customer in Versova, Andheri West. The incident, which took place recently, has sparked widespread outrage after a video surfaced on social media showing the employee refusing to speak in Marathi and insisting on speaking only in Hindi.

In the video, the D-Mart employee is heard telling the customer, "I will not speak in Marathi, I will speak in Hindi. Do what you want to do." This statement led to an argument between the two, with the customer recording the exchange on their phone. The video quickly spread online and reached Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists.

Upon learning about the incident, MNS workers, led by Sandesh Desai, the president of the Versova MNS unit, rushed to the D-Mart store to confront the employee. The situation escalated when the MNS workers allegedly slapped the employee in response to his behavior. Another video showing the slapping incident also went viral on social media, further fueling the controversy.

The D-Mart employee, after the altercation, reportedly apologized for his actions and assured that he would not disrespect the Marathi language again. He stated, “I apologize for my behavior and promise not to insult Marathi speakers in the future.”

A Growing Issue of Language Discrimination

This incident is not an isolated one. Recently, there has been an increasing number of cases in Mumbai where Marathi-speaking residents are facing pressure from non-native speakers to communicate in Hindi or other regional languages.

Earlier, a similar incident occurred at an Airtel gallery in the Charcop area, where a Hindi-speaking employee argued with a Marathi customer and refused to speak in Marathi, even questioning why the customer expected to converse in Marathi.

These incidents have sparked debates about the growing arrogance of some non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai, a city that has long been home to people from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

The Maharashtra government has previously granted Marathi the status of a classical language, yet many Marathi speakers continue to feel that their language is not respected in their own home.
