Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy on Tuesday suspended 12 Congress MLAs for seven days over charges of indiscipline in the House. The suspension was implemented following a motion moved by government Chief Whip Saroj Pradhan, which was adopted by the House.
The suspended legislators included Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Rama Chandra Kadam, along with Sagar Charan Das, Mangu Khilla, Satyajeet Gomango, Ashok Kumar Das, Dasarathi Gamango, and Sofia Firdous.
As soon as Speaker Padhy announced the suspension order, Congress members staged a protest inside the Assembly. They played gongs and created a ruckus as a mark of dissent against the decision.
The disruptions forced the Speaker to adjourn the House till 4:19 PM. However, as the chaos continued, the session was further adjourned for another 15 minutes.
The Odisha Congress leadership has yet to officially respond to the suspensions, but party sources indicated that they might challenge the decision and continue their protests inside and outside the Assembly.
More developments are expected as the political confrontation escalates in the Odisha Assembly.
