New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations on March 12. Upon his arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Port Louis, he was warmly received by Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

The visit marked a significant milestone in India-Mauritius relations, highlighting historical ties, strategic cooperation, and cultural camaraderie.

Acknowledging Mauritius' deep-rooted connection with India, PM Modi referred to the island nation as "Mini India." He emphasized its pivotal role in India's SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative and launched the MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) to enhance strategic collaboration.

PM Modi announced India’s commitment to constructing a new Parliament building for Mauritius as a gift from the "Mother of Democracy," reinforcing diplomatic and strategic ties. This move also elevated bilateral relations to the status of an 'Enhanced Strategic Partnership.'

Diplomatic Engagements with Mauritian Leaders

PM Modi met with Leader of Opposition Georges Pierre Lesjongard and former PM Pravind Jugnauth, with discussions attended by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Cultural and Traditional Gifts

As a gesture of cultural goodwill, PM Modi presented an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card to PM Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam. He also gifted them sacred Sangam water from the Maha Kumbh , superfood makhana, and a traditional Banarasi saree.

Environmental Commitment: ‘Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam’ Initiative

PM Modi planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden as part of the ‘Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam’ (Plant4Mother) initiative. He commended Mauritius for its climate change efforts and its role in the International Solar Alliance and Global Biofuel Alliance.

INS Imphal Showcases India’s Naval Strength

The INS Imphal, a Vishakhapatnam-class destroyer, docked in Mauritius for National Day and opened its deck to the public, showcasing India's naval capabilities.

Indian Forces Shine in Mauritius’ National Day Parade

Marching contingents from the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and NCC cadets participated in Mauritius' National Day celebrations. The event also featured a helicopter display by the Indian Navy and an Akash Ganga Skydiving performance.

Visit to the Sacred Ganga Talao

PM Modi visited Ganga Talao (Grand Basin), a revered Hindu pilgrimage site surrounded by temples dedicated to Shiva and Hanuman. He also reviewed India-backed redevelopment efforts at the site.
