New Delhi: A 29-year-old ticket checker, Vijay Kumar Pandit, was attacked with a hockey stick by a passenger after issuing a fine for improper travel on September 19 at Nallasopara railway station. The incident marks the second assault on a Western Railway ticket checker under similar circumstances.

Pandit has been working at the station for the past ten months. On the morning of the attack, around 7:13 a.m., he was conducting ticket checks for passengers disembarking from a local first-class bus near the station master's office on platform one. During his checks, he encountered a passenger who had exited from the first-class coach but presented a second-class ticket from Goregaon to Nalasopara.

Pandit informed the passenger that his ticket was invalid and that he would need to pay a fine of Rs 345 for using the first-class carriage without a proper ticket. The passenger, claiming he only had Rs 210, pleaded for leniency. Considering his situation, Pandit reduced the fine to Rs 150 and advised him not to use the first-class service in the future.

After their exchange, the passenger left, and Pandit resumed his duties. However, moments later, as he was walking toward the ticket collector's office, the same passenger approached him from behind and struck him with a hockey stick, causing injury.

Pandit suffered injuries, with blood streaming from a wound near his ear. He was taken to Riddhi Vinayak Hospital in Nallasopara West and later transferred to Jagjivan Ram Hospital in Mumbai Central.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the unidentified assailant under sections 121(2) and 132 of the Railway Act. An investigation is currently underway to nab the attacker.
