New Delhi: Samajwadi party leader Swami Prasad Maurya, who is infamous for his controversial statements, unleashed a fresh attack against the Hindu religion, by saying 'Hindu ek dhokha hai' and that 'Hinduism is not a religion but a deceit and a means of livelihood for some.'

Maurya's contentious comment against Sanatan Dharma triggered a nationwide controversy, and drawn sharp criticism by the Centre’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Hindu ek dhoka hai (Hindu religion is a betrayal),” the controversial leader said, trying to justify his statement, citing views that Hinduism is a way of life, during his address at 'Bahujan Adhikar Sammelan' held under the aegis of Mission Jai Bhim at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 25.

“In 1955, the Supreme Court said in its order that Hindu is not a religion but a way of life. It is a conglomeration of more than 200 religions. Even Mohan Bhagwat had said, not once but twice, that Hindu is not a religion but a way of life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said that Hindu is not a religion. Even Gadkari had said the same thing in a media conclave,” Maurya added.

In a video posted on X, the SP leader was heard saying, “The roots of Brahminism are very deep and the reason for all the disparity is also Brahminism. There is no religion called Hindu, Hinduism is just a hoax. There is a conspiracy to trap the Dalits, tribals and backward people of this country by calling the same Brahmin religion as Hindu religion.”

He also questioned the birth of Hindu goddess Lakshmi and said, “How can Lakshmi be born with four hands?”

In a post on X, Swami Prasad Maurya emphasized that every child born anywhere in the world has two hands, two legs, two ears, and two eyes. He questioned the notion of goddess Lakshmi being born with four hands by highlighting that no child with eight or ten hands has ever been born.

Earlier this year, he stoked another row by saying that there exist several crores of people who have not or do not read Ramcharitmanas.

He went on to say that the Hindu religious text was 'all nonsense' and urged the government to erase the objectionable part of Ramcharitmanas or should ban the entire book. He mentioned that the said religious text accords low caste to 'Shudras'. Also, he said that ‘Tulsidas’ wrote the text for his own ‘happiness.’
