Kandhamal: A 55-year-old woman and her son sustained severe burn injuries after an LPG cylinder in their kitchen caught fire in Kandhamal in Odisha , police said on Sunday.
The victims, Geetanjali Panda and her son Chandan, were initially admitted to a local hospital but were later transferred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur due to the critical nature of their injuries.
According to the police, Geetanjali was cooking when the LPG cylinder began leaking and caught fire.
“She screamed for help, and her son rushed to her aid, resulting in both of them suffering severe burns,” officials said.
Villagers managed to rescue them and take them to the Balliguda Sub-divisional Hospital.
However, as their condition worsened, they were moved to Berhampur for further treatment, officials added.
An investigation is underway in the incident, they added.
Meanwhile, a Class 10 student gave birth to a premature baby in the hostel of a state-run residential school in Odisha 's Malkangiri district. Following the event, the school authorities suspended the headmaster on Tuesday, along with other staff members, according to officials.
A day after the incident, the district administration of Malkangiri conducted an inquiry and promptly removed hostel matron Suchitra Charchi from her duties.
Additionally, an auxiliary nurse and midwife were placed under suspension. The student, who had returned to the hostel after appearing for her board examination, gave birth to a baby girl on Monday, officials confirmed.
