Hours after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP CM since independence, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee updated her official X bio, marking a symbolic shift in Bengal’s political landscape.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the members of the newly sworn-in BJP government in the state. Modi attended the grand oath-taking ceremony at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds, where Adhikari and his council of ministers took oath in the presence of top NDA leaders.

At a time when the newly elected BJP government is set to take oath in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a social media post paying tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary.

“On this sacred day of the twenty-fifth of Baishakh, I offer my endless salutations at the feet of the world-renowned supreme thinker and poet laureate, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindra Jayanti is for us a grand festival of the rebirth of the Bengali language, culture, and heritage,” an excerpt from her tweet reads.

 

Suvendu, dressed in a simple saffron kurta that echoed the simplicity of Mamata's trademark white saree and rubber slippers, took oath alongside Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Dilip Ghosh, Ashok Kirtania, and Kshudiram Tudu.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal Chief Minister after his party won the assembly election in this eastern state for the first time in its tumultuous electoral history, from the hands of the communists to Mamata Banerjee's activism-esque style that lasted 15 years.

Born on December 15, 1970, in a political family in Contai (Kanthi), Purba Medinipur, Suvendu Adhikari hails from a Mahishya Kshatriya background. His father, Sisir Adhikari, is a veteran politician and former Union Minister. Suvendu began his career with the Indian National Congress in 1995 as a councillor in Kanthi Municipality. He joined the newly formed TMC in 1998 and quickly rose through the ranks.

According to the traffic advisory, vehicular movement will be restricted on numerous key thoroughfares, including Esplanade Ramp, K.P. Road, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, and Queensway.

Parking of any kind will be prohibited near the Victoria Memorial and adjacent roads. Restrictions will continue in effect on sections of AJC Bose Road between Hastings Crossing and Cathedral Road, as well as Khidderpore Road, Hospital Road, Queensway, Cathedral Road, Casuarina Avenue, and Lovers Lane.

BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar says, "...We are all very happy that our leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal since Independence. The BJP government will work for the development of the state...We will stay in power in Bengal for 50-60 years" 

As per sources, only Suvendu Adhikari and five ministers will take the oath today.

West Bengal CM oath ceremony LIVE: The BJP won the West Bengal assembly elections with a historic win of 207 of 264 seats. The high-stakes elections were held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the votes were counted on May 4. As the results unveiled an upset for the TMC, Mamata alleged vote rigging and initially refused to resign. Her claim was backed by the INDIA bloc.

Notably, Suvendu's close aide Chandranath Rath was shot dead late on Wednesday night amid the high post-poll political drama in Bengal.

Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

In a post on X, Adhikari wrote, “On the birth anniversary of the world poet, Nobel laureate, and globally renowned poet-sage Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, I offer my heartfelt respects.

Several Union ministers, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Suresh Gopi also reached Kolkata for the event. Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and Manipur Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen are attending the grand swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Grounds.

 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari vowed to restore the Bengali pride in his first address after being named as the Chief Minister of Bengal. Guaranteeing to fulfill all the promises made by his party, Adhikari said that his government will form a panel to probe TMC's corruption.

BJP's Adhikari Suvendu, who contested from Nandigram seat, holds a post graduate degree. The 57-year-old winning candidate declared ₹85.87 lakh worth of assets. He has 29 criminal cases registered against him.

Suvendu's oath-taking ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11 am.

Adhikari originally earned his reputation as a "giant-killer" during the 2021 Assembly elections when he first defeated Banerjee in their high-stakes contest in Nandigram.
