An art retreat: Mumbai gallery weekend all set to make a comeback in January
Mumbai gallery weekend will be making a comeback in January, here is all you need to know.
Mumbai gallery weekend is a treat for all the art lovers. For people who want to explore art, this four-day event has you covered with exhibitions in Colaba, Fort, Kala Ghoda, Ballard Estate, Worli, Lower Parel, Byculla and Bandra. This event also comes as a great opportunity to engage with the visual arts, including media art, installation, the decorative arts, and design. The event started in 2012 with a group of 9 galleries. The gallery weekend is now entering its 11th year, with 32 participating galleries.
When will the event take place?
This edition will begin on January 11 and end on January 14. This edition promises to be grander than ever before. Spanning from Colaba to Juhu, a total of 34 participating galleries and design venues from across Mumbai will unite under one umbrella.
“Mumbai Gallery Weekend (MGW) began in 2012 as a collaborative initiative by the city’s leading contemporary art galleries. The scope of MGW has evolved over time to include new galleries and cultural spaces. The endeavour, however, has remained the same – to bring together potential art collectors and enthusiasts in order to broaden the reach and relevance of contemporary art,” states the official website.
What to expect
Many entrants will be showcasing their pieces at the event. Some of these entrants include Experimeter Colaba, Chemould CoLab, Art and Charlie, and the impressive Ice Factory Ballard Estate — which will host a Young Collectors’ Weekend. DAG will present a single work at their space in the Taj Mahal hotel. This will include the first-ever commissioned portrait by Raja Ravi Varma.
This year also includes a series of talks at the CSMVS museum. This will be in association with the prestigious India art fair and many other events that celebrate art and culture talents of the city.
