Princess Diana's timeless dress worn by the royal beauty in 1985 recently fetched a staggering $1,148,080 at Julien's Auctions in Hollywood. The black, ballerina-length velvet evening dress not only exceeded expectations but also set a new fashion record, becoming the most expensive dress worn by Diana ever sold at auction.

Princess Diana's dress at auction 

Originally estimated to be valued at $100,000, the gown's final selling price reflects the fascination with Diana's fashion legacy. The dress, featuring distinctive elements such as shoulder pads, a blue organza skirt, a large bow, and a sash, embodies the elegance and sophistication associated with the Princess of Wales.

Diana made a debut with the dress during a royal tour with her then-husband Charles, Prince of Wales, in Florence, Italy, in 1985. Its subsequent appearance at Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986 further solidified its significance in the royal wardrobe. The gown's historical value is increased because of its association with memorable moments in Diana's public life.

The dress was tailored with fabric selected by the renowned textile merchant Jakob Schlaepfer. The metallic embroidered stars, intricately and minutely threaded by the design team at Jacques Azagury, add a touch of regal opulence to the ensemble.
