The world of dating and relationships has evolved with time. Dating now, in the modern times, is completely different from how it used to be. With the advent of social media and dating apps, it is easier to connect with more people and find ‘the one.’ With having a good knowledge of what is healthy for us, we should also watch out for patterns that don’t suit us well.

Certain toxic trends that have emerged can affect people both emotionally and mentally. Now that the year is coming to an end, let’s have a look at some of these trends that were deemed ‘toxic’.

Ghosting

Ghosting refers to a behavioral pattern where a person starts to ignore their partner when they feel no longer interested in them. Imagine a scenario where everything is going well and you are talking to each other, all day and all night. Suddenly, they stop responding to your texts. Yes, that is ghosting for you. Meaning, you are being ghosted by your partner. In the dating realm, it is more like an unexpected sudden fade-out.

Orbiting

More than a trend, orbiting is the digital phenomenon where a person cuts off all direct communication with you but continues to engage on social media. Not answering your calls but still liking all your photos on Instagram? That is what orbiting is for you. They will not directly indulge in any form of communication but will make sure that you know they’re on a look out.

Blame game

Tired of questioning and then counter-questioning? Voila, you have been bitten by the blame gaming bug. Engaging in blame games and not taking accountability for our own actions can lead to bitterness in a relationship and should be avoided.

Love bombing

This term was made famous by the Netflix documentary, The Tinder Swindler. It is a form of psychological abuse where a person goes beyond you to manipulate you into a relationship, only to devalue you. For instance, someone enters your life and floods you with compliments and sweet gestures. However, once they become that special person to you, they start showing their real side. This is what love bombing is.
