History states that the union territory had once been admired by kings and emperors. It sees one of the highest numbers of footfalls in the summer and autumn months which are essentially the best time to visit. But apart from the famous Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir has many other beautiful places where one can enjoy the scenic landscape. Here is a list of the less explored places that this holiday destination has to offer:

Bangus Valley

Bangus Valley is situated in the Kupwara district and is one of the beautiful, yet unexplored places of Jammu and Kashmir. The valley is located amidst an idyllic forest of pine trees and surrounded by mountains. One of the main attractions of the place is the Kala Roos Caves which contain Stone Age wall paintings. It also boasts of a hot water spring. Bangus is a part of India’s eco-tourism drive and hence, tourists are not allowed to stay at night. Moreover, one needs to obtain permission from the SP of Kishtwar. There is a guest house on the banks of River Mawar in Reshwari village where one can lodge after a tour of Bangus Valley.

Chatpal

Chatpal is nature’s paradise with green woods of pine and a serpentine spring running through the valley. In its scenic beauty, Chatpal is almost like Pahalgam but less exploited by tourists. It is a memorable destination for one trying to get away from the usual rush and yet enjoy the beauty that Jammu and Kashmir offers. One can go hiking in the woods or simply interact with the locals. Chatpal has a tourist bungalow maintained by JKTDC where one can plan their stay.

Yusmarg

It is also one of the less-visited places in Jammu and Kashmir. With lush green meadows and pine forests fringing the valley, Yusmarg is no less beautiful than Gulmarg or Sonmarg. A 11-kilometre trek leads up to a pristine frozen lake. Yusmarg is only a two-hour drive from Srinagar so it will be feasible to stay there.

Gurez

Located on the ancient Silk Route, Gurez is one of the high altitude Himalayan villages. It gives a wonderful view of snow-covered mountains and sparkling river, the Kishanganga, which flows through the valley. It also houses some exotic wildlife like snow leopards and brown bear. From Gurez one can cover the beautiful Tulail Valley on the same day. However, being located on the LOC, Tulail Valley needs permission from the Army Camp and SP of the area. Lodging accommodations in Gurez includes tent and homestay arranged by the locals.

Lolab Valley

Lolab Valley is comparatively more popular than the others. Lolab Valley is well-connected to Srinagar and can be reached by bus or hired cars. It is somewhat popular with tourists, though not as frequented as Gulmarg, Sonmarg or Pahalgam. Lolab Valley is a treat for the eyes with its apple orchards, springs and paddy fields. The Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, ibex and hangul (Kashmiri stag) are some of the animals that can be found in the valley. JKTDC has arranged lodging accommodation for tourists in Chandigam which is a few kilometres ahead of Lolab Valley.
