The busy streets, never-dying nightlife, and magnificent historical places make this city worth-seeing and experiencing. Mumbai has so many historical places and unique and intriguing backstory that one cannot miss. The city is an interesting mixture of modern and ancient culture, structure, and design, which is amazing. Here are some famous historical places in Mumbai to visit once in a life-time.

Gateway of India

Gateway of India is on the top of the tourist attraction list of the city. This historical place was built in 1911 to honour the visit of King George V, who was the King of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary. The entire monument is made of yellow basalt and concrete. It has some elements that are inspired by Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture, which are mixed with gothic architecture.

  • Location: It is located in the southern part of the Mumbai city and near the beautiful Taj Mahal Hotel.

Kanheri caves

Kanheri caves depict a historic significance influenced by various Buddha sculptures and carvings. It is famous for its ancient Indian styled structure and also the 109 entrances to the caves. It is a perfect picnic spot in Mumbai with a stunning view.

  • Location: It is located in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the Western Suburbs of the city.

Haji Ali Dargah

Haji Ali Dargah is one of the most ancient landmarks in the city. Haji Ali Dargha is a mosque and tomb of an Islamic Saint named Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who settled in the port region of Mumbai. Followers of then built the Haji Ali Dargah as a memorial to the great saint. The Dargah is a build-up of a white marble known as Makrana.

  • Location: It is located close to Mahalakshmi Temple and Nehru Planetarium, and also near the Mahalakshmi station.

Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves is a connect of caves – five Hindu and two Buddhist caves, with innumerable sculptures and carvings. Located at about 10 km away from Gateway of India, the caves stand top in Mumbai tourism ist and is a popular tourist attraction. The caves were invaded by the Portuguese who titled the caves as Elephanta and used God’s sculptures as target practice.

  • Location: It is located on Elephanta Island, which is around 11 km away from the main city.

Mount Mary Church

Mount Mary Church is one of the most beautiful churches in the city. It is a Roman Catholic Church that is sacred to the Virgin Mary. It is located in Bandra West, opposite the Arabian Sea. The church has a gothic structure, with interiors having decorative walls and complex carvings that make it unique. It is a perfect place for peace chasers and those who adore colonial architecture.

  • Location: Located in Bandra, on a beautiful hill on the borders of Mumbai. Bandra-Worli Sea link and Bandra fort are nearby, around 1-km away.
