Guwahati: BJP legislator from Sootea constituency of Assam Padma Hazarika has put the ruling party in an embarrassing position in the state. This, after the legislator, who also enjoys cabinet rank for being the Chairman of Gorukhuti Agricultural Project, took out a rally against the State police department.

With slogans against the police department and the administration, the rally moved through the main road of Jamugurihaat. The one leading the rally was Padma Hazarika. The rally was organized to draw the attention of the police department to the increasing crime, particularly thefts in the locality. The slogans, which translates to 'Wake Up Police Force', 'Attention Police, Administration', echoed throughout the small town as they walked holding placards and banners to submit the memorandum to the District Commissioner and Police Superintendent. The rally has raised the eyebrows of many across the State, people are left wondering as to what made a sitting MLA with cabinet status to walk on the road protesting against his own government.

Interestingly, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is also the Home Minister of the State. The police force comes under Home Department. To add more twist, the Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur district is none other than Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister Sarma's younger brother.

The MLA in question, Padma Hazarika, is known to have a sore relation with Chief Minister Sarma. As such, it is also being speculated by many as a deliberate move by Hazarika to embarrass the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, a few BJP supporters have criticized Hazarika and accused him of tarnishing the image of the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled early this year. The opposition has already made it a talking point to hit out at the Government. "We don't need to question the BJP anymore, the BJP leaders themselves have started to revolt against their own government," said a Congress leader.

Sources in the BJP State Headquarters in Guwahati have said that the party is disappointed by the act of Hazarika and he might be served a show cause notice. However, the source said that the decision will be taken by the top leadership of the party.
