The BCCI, on Monday, has accepted Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik's unconditional apology for violating a clause of his central contract by watching a Caribbean Premier League match from a participating team's dressing room. Karthik issued an "unconditional apology" for violating BCCI's central contract clause by watching a Caribbean Premier League game from the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned Trinbago Knight Riders' dressing room.

The matter has been closed

"The BCCI has accepted Dinesh Karthik's apology and the matter is now a closed chapter," a Board official told PTI.

As per the central contract, Karthik, who has played 26 Tests and 94 ODIs for India, should have taken permission from the BCCI before attending the match. His contract bars him from being associated with any private league. Karthik is the captain of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders but being seen in a Trinbago Jersey, while watching the match from the dressing room, prompted the BCCI to issue a show-cause notice, asking why his central contract should not be cancelled. Karthik, in his reply, submitted that he went to Port of Spain on KKR coach Brendon McCullum's request and watched the match wearing the TKR jersey, again, on the New Zealander's insistence.

 Dinesh Karthik tenders apology

"I wish to tender an unconditional apology for not seeking permission from BCCI prior to embarking on this visit," Karthik wrote in his apology letter. "I wish to reiterate that I have neither participated in any TKR related activities nor played any role whatsoever for TKR," he added.

Dinesh Karthik lands in controversy

The BCCI got a screengrab of Karthik wearing Trinbago Knight Riders jersey and relaxing in the dressing room alongside Brendon McCullum. It is learned that Karthik, who is the captain of Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, didn’t seek any permission from the BCCI to attend the event in the West Indies.

The Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman’s international career is believed to be all but over after his failure in the World Cup having scored 8 and 6 in two games that he batted. His susceptible technique in bowler-friendly conditions was badly exposed after his selection in the national team without any proper ODI performance created a furore.

The National One Day Championship for the Vijay Hazare Trophy starts on September 24, where Karthik is expected to play for Tamil Nadu.

“As a centrally contracted cricketer, Dinesh Karthik had no business being seen in a franchise league which is not IPL. His central contract prevents him from being associated with any private league as it has been the BCCI clause for all active first-class cricketers,” the senior official said.
