The South African cricket team, who are currently 0-2 down in the ongoing Freedom Trophy Test series, suffered yet another blow on Thursday as their opening batsman Aiden Markram was ruled out of the final Test against India in Ranchi. Team India have won both the Test matches in Vishakhapatnam and Pune so far to regain the trophy which they lost in South Africa last year. The three-match Test series between two nations also forms a part of the ongoing inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship.

Aiden Markram ruled out of third Test

The right-handed opening batsman Aiden Markram suffered a self-inflicted wrist injury after his dismissal in the second innings in Pune. Markram was trapped in front of stumps by Ishant Sharma to register his second duck of the match. The batsman lashed out at a solid object in frustration, which resulted in the injury. According to the South African team doctor Hashendra Ramjee, a CT scan indicates a fracture involving in his wrist bones. He was therefore ruled out of the third Test and will immediately fly back to South Africa to see a specialist.

According to an official Cricket South Africa statement, the 25-year old batsman accepted that he had let his team down by saying, “It’s sad to be going home on this note and I completely understand what I’ve done wrong and take full accountability for it. It’s unacceptable in a Proteas environment and to let the team down is what hurts me the most. I’ve learned a lot from this and the other players I’m sure, have learned from it as well. We understand in sport that emotions run high and sometimes the frustration gets the better of you as it did for me, but like I said, it’s no excuse. I’ve taken full responsibility for it, I have apologized to the team and hopefully I can make it up to them and the people of South Africa soon.”

Markram's freak injury comes days after Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh fractured his right hand by punching on a wall in a fit of anger following his dismissal in a Sheffield Shield match recently.
