After having a torrid time on the field on Day 1, the South African bowlers continued to struggle on Day 2 as the Indian batsmen amassed 502-7d in their first innings. To make things worse for the visitors, the Proteas top-order failed to negotiate the 20 overs late in the day as they were left reeling at 39-3 at stumps. Some late strikes by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the day destroyed the South African top-order as they lost Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn and nightwatchman Dane Piedt for single-digit scores.

The South Africans began Day 3 at 39-3. After a cautious start to the day by their two overnight batsmen, Temba Bavuma was trapped in front of stumps by Ishant Sharma to leave the visitors at 63-4. Bavuma’s dismissal brought in skipper Faf du Plessis to the crease as he joined opener Dean Elgar to provide some much-needed resistance. The duo successfully counter-attacked the Indian spinners to make sure there were no more hiccups till lunch. The two batsmen stitched together a crucial unbeaten partnership of 90 runs to take the visitors to 153-4 in 50 overs. A total of 114 runs were scored in the morning session for the loss of just 1 wicket, thus making it the first good session for the visitors in the Test so far. As we proceed towards the afternoon session in a while, the Proteas will be looking to stretch their score in hopes to avoid the follow-on. At 153, the visiting team still trail the hosts by 349 runs.
