After wicket-less 59.1 overs on Day 1, the South African bowlers continued to struggle on Day 2 as the Indian batsmen amassed 502-7d in their first innings. To make things worse for the visitors, South Africa's top-order failed to negotiate the 20 overs late in the day as they were left reeling at 39-3 at stumps. Some late strikes by Ashwin and Jadeja in the day destroyed the South African top-order as they lost Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn and nightwatchman Dane Piedt for single-digit scores.

The South Africans began Day 3 at 39-3. However, they lost their fourth wicket in the form of Temba Bavuma earlier in the day. At 63-4, skipper Faf du Plessis joined opener Dean Elgar at the crease to provide some much-needed resistance. South Africa, without losing any further wicket, ended session one at 153-4.

In the post-lunch session, the visitors lost captain du Plessis, who scored a resilient 55. Dean Elgar, however, continued on his run-making ways as he went onto smash the 12^th Test century of his career. At 178-5, Elgar was joined by wicket-keeper/batsman Quinton de Kock, who scored a quick-fire 69 in the course of his innings. Going into Tea, the duo stitched together an unbeaten 114-run partnership as South Africa inch closer towards their follow-on target. At 292-5 after an extended second session, the visitors are now just 11 runs away from avoiding follow-on as they trail India's first innings score by another 210 runs. As we move into the final session of the day, the Proteas will be looking to reduce the gap between two teams without losing any further wicket.
