The first match of the India vs South Africa Test series started on Wednesday morning in Visakhapatnam. Captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat first. The big news of the day was that along with Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma stepped out to open the Indian Innings. This is the first time Rohit Sharma is opening the innings for the Indian Test side and he has capitalised on the opportunity with open arms. Rohit Sharma scored a century on Day 1 of the first Test match and is currently standing tall at an unbeaten 115 as the players wait for rains to clear up and the play to resume.
Rohit Sharma's prowess in ODI cricket is something that is acknowledged by most of the cricketing world. The man who scored five centuries in the 2019 Cricket World Cup alone, had only scored three in Test cricket, before this morning. Rohit opened the innings with Mayank Agarwal and paced himself beautifully. He played his trademark shots but also planned his innings impeccably. Occasionally jumping out of the crease to smash a spinner for a six over long-on, Rohit Sharma has been in no way different from how he is against the white ball. In the calm innings that is currently underway, Rohit got to his fifty in 84 balls. On the 154th ball, Rohit guided the ball through the off-side to get a single and go from 99 to 100. He is currently at 115 runs off the 174 deliveries he has faced. He has hit 12 fours and 5 sixes.
Thanks to Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal's masterclass of a partnership, the Proteas have not got any momentum on their side. After deciding to bat first, team India has not given any chances to the South Africans as Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal are currently on a partnership of 202 runs for the first wicket. Off-break spinner Dane Piedt has been smashed, especially by Sharma, as the bowler has now conceded 43 runs in the seven overs he has bowled. The play is currently paused as rains have taken over the stadium but the play is expected to resume in some time. After 59.1 overs, India are at 202 runs for the loss of no wickets. Mayank Agarwal is batting at 84 and Rohit Sharma is batting at 115.
