Sarfaraz Ahmed has been sacked as the Pakistan captain in the longest as well as the shortest formats of the game i.e. Tests and T20Is by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday. This news was confirmed by the governing body of world cricket International Cricket Council (ICC) on their official Twitter handle.

As of now, Sarfaraz might still continue to be the ODI skipper of the Pakistan team, but no official confirmation has been made by the PCB yet. The Men In Green will be playing their next ODI match in July 2020 against the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Azhar Ali will be leading the team in Tests while Babar Azam will be leading in the game's shortest format. Babar, on the other hand, is currently the top-ranked T20I batsman.

Sarfaraz Ahmed the 'Captain'

Sarfaraz Ahmed was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan team after their miserable ICC World T20 campaign in India where they had crashed out in the league stages following which Shahid Afridi had announced his retirement from international cricket. Ahmed was named the Test captain in 2016 after the retirement of the former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq who is the current head coach and chief selector of Pakistan. Misbah had led them to the summit of the ICC World Test Championship back then after a successful Test series against England in England where the closely fought series was drawn. While Sarfaraz could not achieve much in Test cricket as a skipper, he led the Men In Green to the top of the ICC T20I rankings with 11th consecutive series wins. Pakistan still continues to be the top-ranked side in the shortest format of the game. He had led his team from the front to win an away T20I series against New Zealand 2-1 after they were whitewashed in the ODI series 5-0. The Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Pakistan team had whitewashed Australia and New Zealand in bilateral T20I series in UAE last year following which they lost an away series against South Africa earlier this year and a home series against a second-string Sri Lankan side recently.

Sarfaraz Ahmed had also led Pakistan to their maiden ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2017. Ahmed was also the skipper during Pakistan's ICC U-19 World Cup triumph in 2006. Both the wins had come against arch-rivals India.
