South Africa’s interim T20 captain Quinton de Kock has indicated that he is not averse to take on the duty full-time if it was offered to him. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who led the team for the first time as a full-time captain against India T20 tour, added that he currently sees himself only as a replacement for regular captain Faf du Plessis. It is being speculated that the Cricket SA is looking to replace Du Plessis after the team’s dismal performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup in England earlier this year.

Reports state that De Kock is one of the front-runners to lead the team in next year’s T20 world cup in Australia. It is being said that the series against India was a grooming session for the cricketer, in order to help him take over the role full-time. De Kock told the media that he still considers himself a replacement captain and that the team still belongs to Du Plessis.

De Kock in Cape Town Blitz

De Kock will be leading the Cape Town Blitz in the second edition of the Mzansi Super League, starting on November 8. The series will see him donning the mantle of captain, wicketkeeper and batsman. Though some think taking on multiple roles may be burdensome, De Kock said that the additional duties would only positively impact his captaincy. He said that standing behind the wicket, he would be at the centre of the action and in a better position to assess field movements and placements.

Talking about the national team’s poor performance this year, De Kock said that it was due to a transitional period within the team, and it was no reason for worry. He said that he was confident the team would mature and show its full potential in the coming days.
