WWE news: Four wrestlers who battled cancer and defeated it

WWE news: Cancer has ruined lives across the world and the champions within WWE have not been immune to the illness. Here are 4 wrestlers who defeated cancer.

Cancer has ruined lives across the world and even the champions within WWE have not been immune to the illness. From Roman Reigns to Michelle McCool and Zack Ryder, all have battled cancer. But like in their professional lives, they have emerged champions, defeating cancer and becoming an inspiration for millions of cancer patients and fans alike.

Here are four WWE wrestlers who triumphed against cancer

1) Roman Reigns

Last year, WWE's undefeated Universal Champion Roman Reigns announced that he was taking a hiatus from professional wrestling to undergo treatment for cancer. The announcement left the wrestling world stunned. Last year, Roman Reigns who was first diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 22, said he was battling cancer again. But Roman Reigns is not the one who walks away from a fight. Just like in the WWE ring, the champion took on the disease head-on. In February 2019, he announced that he was cancer-free. Since then, he has returned to professional wrestling.

Bret Hart

Anyone who follows WWE religiously knows the legendary Bret Hart. In 2016, the Hitman revealed on Facebook that he had prostate cancer. Luckily for Bret Hart, the cancer had been contained in the prostrate area, and he underwent surgery to remove it. Since the surgery, Hart has revealed that he has been free of the disease but would require regular check-ups henceforth to monitor the remission. The WWE Hall of Famer now devotes time to creating awareness regarding the illness and promotes regular health check-ups.

Michelle McCool

Michelle McCool is a former WWE Women's champion and the wife of the legendary WWE wrestler - The Undertaker. The WWE Diva announced in 2016 that she had skin cancer. She took to Instagram, extolling the virtues of sunscreen and advising the youth to use sunscreen if they do not want to have "holes" cut into their skin. Luckily for McCool, skin cancer is treatable, and she received appropriate treatment in time. Since then, McCool makes sporadic appearances in WWE and is keen on spreading awareness about the disease.

Zack Ryder

Zack Ryder has faced several fierce battles in the WWE ring, but they all seem inconsequential in comparison to his fight against cancer. The former Intercontinental Champion was diagnosed with cancer in high school. According to him, his dream of becoming a professional wrestler is what motivated him to fight the disease. Ryder revealed that he had a cancerous growth on his foot which later travelled to his lungs and he was forced to undergo numerous surgeries and chemotherapy. Now, the wrestler is cancer-free. He has spoken publicly about his fight with cancer and how the disease has given him the spirit to perform better in the WWE circuit.
