Sports fraternity paid tribute to two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman as the legendary boxer took his last breath on March 21 at the age of 76. Foreman is considered the second-best boxer after Muhammad Ali. Both Ali and Foreman shared a healthy rivalry during their career.
The legendary boxer retired from the sport in 1997 and lost only five bouts throughout his career. His first defeat in his professional career was against Muhammad Ali.
The death of George Foreman brought the sporting world together as they joined hands to pay tribute to the boxer. Six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen reacted to Foreman's death and said that his legacy will live on.
"Rest in peace, George Foreman. Your legacy lives on, champ," Scottie Pippen wrote on X.
NBA legend Magic Johnson recalled the times when he attended George’s championship fights and called him a ‘knockout artist’ in the ring.
“I was really sad to hear the news that one of my boxing heroes, George Foreman, passing away. I attended so many of George’s championship fights over his career. He was a knockout artist in the ring, and it was a pleasure getting to know him not only as a boxer but as a man. After leaving the ring, he turned into an amazing businessman — I even bought one of the first George Foreman grills! Cookie and I will be praying for his family during this time,” Johnson wrote on X.
One of the biggest names in boxing Mike Tyson reacted to George’s death and said that his contribution to the sport will never be forgotten.
"Condolences to George Foreman’s family. His contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten," Mike Tyson wrote on X.
George Foreman's family released a statement on Instagram and confirmed the news of the boxer's passing away. However, the reason for the death is not yet known.
“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” the statement read.
The legendary boxer George Foreman had a staggering career with 76 wins, including 68 knockout victories. The former boxer won the Olympics gold in 1968.
