Champions Trophy 2025, AFG vs AUS: The Champions Trophy clash between Afghanistan and Australia had an abrupt end after rainfall took over the Lahore region. In what was initially thought as passing showers, it did a lot of damage to the play. The play had to be stopped when Australia were batting in the 13th over. The incompetence of the stadium's drainage system and the inefficiency of the ground staff led to the match being called off due to wet outfield. Australia, who were in the better position in the group standings, got the edge while Afghanistan's dreams to make it to the Champions Trophy semifinal were shattered.

Afghanistan's Dreams Crumbled Due To Rain After Match Gets Called Off

Australia found an easy path to the Champions Trophy semifinals after the match was curtailed due to rain. Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium witnessed rain showers after the past couple of matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled. While the AFG vs AUS match went on smoothly, rain stopped play during the 2nd innings. Travis Head's 59 and skipper Steve Smith helped the score reach 109/1 before rain halted play.

Afghanistan's chances to reach the Champions Trophy semifinal is like finding a needle in a haystack. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side has three points on the board and are currently at the number three spot. But Australia has soared to the top with four points. However, the odds are stacked against them, as they may not secure a spot even if England secure a win over South Africa, as the latter has a better run rate.

Afghanistan lost their opening batters early on, as Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for a duck and Ibrahim Zadran, who had scored a record-breaking innings in the previous match-up, was taken out at 22 runs. Sediqullah Atal held on for a crucial 85-run knock, while half-centurion Azmatullah Omarzai scored 67 off 63 balls to stabilize the Afghan batting force.

Australia's bowling attack came up big, taking some key wickets and derailing the Afghans' momentum after the latter defeated the Jus Buttler-led England in a nail-biting thriller. The Steve Smith-led side held Afghanistan to a chaseable score of 273.
