'He has the belief': Gavaskar opines on how a young sensation could turn out as next Yuvraj Singh

Legendary Indian batter, Sunil Gavaskar, has praised Rinku Singh for all that he has shown so far. During the discussion segment of the India vs South Africa 1st T20I, Gavaskar lavished praise on the youngster, saying the batter possesses talent. He even addressed the comparisons between him and Yuvraj Singh.

Sunil Gavaskar hails the 'belief' of Rinku Singh

Rinku rose to prominence after slamming Gujarat Titans' Yash Dayal for five sixes in the final over of an IPL 2023 game, propelling Kolkata Knight Riders to a thrilling victory. Speaking about Rinku, Gavaskar stated that one of the batter's greatest qualities is his confidence in himself.

"Talent - it's not given to everybody. You can love the game. You can play all day, but sometimes you know you might not quite have the talent, but he has the belief that he could do it, and that's what he's done over the last 2-3 years. Again here in the IPL, he was in and out of a lot of teams when he finally got the opportunity and the way he grabbed it (was amazing)," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar on Rinku being compared to Yuvraj Singh

Gavaskar stated that Indian fans are already comparing Rinku's abilities to those of one of India's most iconic cricketers, Yuvraj Singh. Gavaskar stated that Indian fans expect Rinku to perform similarly to Yuvraj Singh.

“And now he's part of an India team. And now there's so much, so many high expectations of them. They are now expecting him to be another Yuvraj Singh. Rinku Singh - Yuvraj Singh. So if you can do even a fraction of what Yuvraj did for Indian cricket, then he will have done wonderfully well," Gavaskar said.

The fans did not get to see Rinku Singh in the first T20I. Rain forced the cancellation of India's first Twenty20 International against South Africa. The match was eventually called off without a toss.
