Steve Smith, the captain of Australia, was instrumental in increasing the team's momentum against India with his 73 off 96 balls. Alex Carey also hit some great shots, scoring 61 off 57, including eight boundaries and a six. Travis Head created the momentum with his 39-run cameo, which gave the Australians a strong start. Following the dismissal of opener Cooper Connolly, the AUS opener recovered somewhat by flicking some good shots off deliveries from Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya. However, Shubman Gill made a solid catch to dismiss the batter after Varun Chakravarthy's enigmatic delivery worked its magic.

Australia's middle-order batsmen were unable to keep up as Ravindra Jadeja's dangerous spell trapped Labuschagne and Virat Kohli made a solid catch from short covers to remove Josh Inglis. Axar Patel's delivery went straight into the stumps, and Glenn Mazwell was unable to hold on either.
