South African opening batsman Aiden Markram suffered a self-inflicted injury after his dismissal in the second innings in Pune. Markram was trapped in front of the stumps by Ishant Sharma to register his second duck of the match. The batsman lashed out at a solid object in frustration, which resulted in the injury. According to the team doctor Hashendra Ramjee, a CT scan indicates a fracture in his wrist bones. The right-handed batsman was therefore ruled out of the third Test and will immediately fly back to South Africa to see a specialist. Senior spinner Keshav Maharaj was also ruled out from the visitor’s squad to further compound their chances.
