Coming to the match, Mumbai Indians top order failed to get it going from the start. Both the openers went back cheaply while Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma chipped in with paltry contributions. It was Deepak Chahar's quickfire 28 of 15 balls which helped the five-time champions to breach the 150 mark hurdle.

Debutant Vignesh Puthur tried to steal the show with a three-wicket haul but Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra ensured CSK stayed on the right path throughout the match. Mumbai have now failed to win their IPL opening encounter since 2012. MI will now try to get back to winning ways when they take on Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans on March 29 in Ahmedabad. Hardik Pandya will return to the side after serving a match ban and it remains to be seen how he manages to get their campaign back on track.
