KKR vs RCB: Virat Kohli Breaks Shikhar Dhawan's Record To Register Unique Feat In IPL History

Indian Premier League: As Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched a stunning seven-wicket triumph over the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025 opener on March 22 at the iconic Eden Gardens, talisman batter Virat Kohli registered another unique milestone in the history of the extravagant T20 tournament.

In the IPL 2025 opener, Kohli played an unbeaten 59-run knock from 36 balls to orchestrate RCB's victory over the Knight Riders. The 36-year-old slammed 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 163.89 during his time on the crease.

Virat Kohli Breaks Shikhar Dhawan's Record To Archive Unique Feat

Kohli broke former Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan's record to become the player with the most runs in successful chases in IPL history. The former RCB skipper scored 2205 runs in 59 innings during successful chases in IPL. Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan amassed 2159 runs in 53 innings. Former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir holds the third place in the chart with 1988 runs in 56 innings. Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Suresh Raina stands in fourth place on the list, with 1825 runs from 63 innings. Star Australian batter David Warner stands in fifth place with 1778 runs in 39 innings.

Recapping RCB's Dominating Win Over KKR

Summarizing the IPL 2025 opener, RCB won the toss and decided to bowl against KKR. The Knight Riders' batting lineup looked shaky against the Royal Challengers' bowling attack.

Ajinkya Rahane played a 56-run knock from 31 balls. He slammed 6 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 180.65. Sunil Narine (44 runs from 26 balls) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (30 runs from 22 balls, 2 fours, and 1 six) propelled KKR to 174/8 in the first inning.

Krunal Pandya led the RCB bowling attack with his three-wicket haul. Josh Hazlewood also bagged two wickets in his four-over spell.

During the run chase, RCB dominated from the very start of the second inning. Philip Salt (56 runs from 31 balls) and Virat Kohli (59* runs from 36 balls, 4 fours, and 3 sixes) cemented a 95-run opening partnership which gave the visitors a kickstart. In the end, Liam Livingstone (15* runs from 5 balls) and Kohli stayed unbeaten on the crease and helped the Bengaluru-based franchise clinch a dominating seven-wicket win over KKR.
