Former Team India cricketer Virender Sehwag raises alarm over Rishabh Pant's troublesome beginning with the Lucknow Super Giants. He believes that the franchise allowed the game to slip away from their hands despite having the win right in their hands at one point of time. Sehwag added that Pant's job was to control the game and incorporate the right bowlers, but he fumbled doing so.
The Lucknow Super Giants' season opener clash against the Delhi Capitals was a neck-and-neck thriller with high-octane action at Vizag. The game once looked firm under LSG's control after they picked up some early wickets to rattle DC. But the Capitals held their composure right from the start, and Ashutosh Sharma spoiled the party for the Super Giants as the Capitals secured a grand win by one wicket. Virender Sehwag was upset with Rishabh Pant's captaincy as he believed that Lucknow let the game fall out of their hands.
"I feel that if Avesh was there, LSG might have not picked two wickets in the first over as Shardul Thakur wouldn't have bowled the first over. Avesh would've bowled. So, we can also say that DC would've have won the game with an over or two to spare. So, whatever happens happens for the good. However, LSG allowed the game slip away.
"Instead of thinking of players who were not there, the ones who were playing should've focused on how can they win the game. That was Rishabh Pant's job. How to control the game, slow the game and bring the right bowlers at the right time. I think he missed a trick there," Virender Sehwag said while speaking to Cricbuzz.
Rishabh Pant failed to prove his INR 25 Crore price tag to the Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL season opener clash. Pressure will be upon the Indian wicketkeeper-batter to bring back LSG into the winning ways as the season progresses.
Notably, Lucknow's next opponent will not be easy to look at, as they will face off against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their upcoming fixture. SRH nearly broke their record for the highest team total against Rajasthan Royals, and the flat tracks will benefit the hosts due to their strength in the batting line-up.
The Hyderabad-Lucknow clash will happen on Thursday, March 26, 2025, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
